Fly Me to the Moon

Fly Me to the Moon

(or at least as far as El Paso)

I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers.” A famous line from “A Streetcar Named Desire” spoken by Blanche Dubois. My boyfriend at the time thought he was hilarious referring to her as Blanche La Bra. Oh, I know, but it was 1951 and we were only 16! Despite all her charm and allure, I don’t think Blanche could have survived present day flying even with the kindness of strangers! I’m not anything like Blanche, however, her famous line seemed to apply to me recently.

It starts with the wheel chair at the check-in point. I have not a shred of pride left. The first time I used a wheel chair, I kept my head down and my dark glasses on. Not anymore – can’t be bothered. I like to engage the drivers in conversation and they all seem to be amenable to that. Most are working two jobs just to exist in Silicon Valley – a wonderful place to be except for the crazy cost of living. Very expensive weather is sold here. And don’t get me started on income disparity!

Now, I’m in the plane – carry on suitcase needs to be hoisted up to the overhead compartment. Help usually comes, not from young men, but middle aged guys who have good relationships with their mothers. Unfortunately, these aren’t the guys who sit two inches from me for four hours. These guys wear billed caps, dark glasses and head phones and do not acknowledge me, the seat mate. Fear that a friendly gesture might stir up emotions in the old lady and they might have to defend them selves against unwanted advances? They need not fret – I’ve always been a sucker for charm and humor of which it appears they have none.

The flight is over and my friend is at the airport to meet me. Blanche, you could have never come this far.
