Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Breaking Up is Hard to Do

Neil Sedaka died a few weeks ago and so did Henry, so breaking up is relevant today. For some of us, it seems that breaking up is easy – for people who marry and divorce time after time. For me it is hard. Of course, I think Mr. Sedaka was referring to romantic break-ups, and yes they are hard. Especially divorces, when the break up is romantic and it’s also the break up of a family – a lifestyle. I’ve been there and never wanted to do it again, thus I never married again.

Breaking up with your pet is heart wrenching. Henry’s passing hit me hard. I was saying goodbye to a future with him. He was young and came to me damaged. Every day, for almost four years, huge progress was made. Etched in my memory was the first time he went out to the garden without me and stood in the sun. A warm breeze wafted over him and he was sniffing the air, He was a piece of work, but he was MY piece of work! Now, no more progress, just an empty house. I’m almost sure that I’ll get another cat – just not this moment.

Have you ever experienced homesickness? I think it’s the result of breaking up with a home/place. This happened to me when we sold our Eichler and moved into the prewar home on the tree lined street, close to my sons’ school and my husband’s work. The irony is that in less than a year my son was kicked out of the highly rated prep school and my husband left and ran off with his secretary. OMG – all this for nothing!

So………….it seems that breaking up is just another word for loss. Who of us hasn’t lost a dear friend. I’ve had a few. Thinking of one friend always brings a smile. We were excited to take “The Fun Trip to Reno” The challenge was to use each and every coupon and we met the challenge. If it meant carrying our drinks from the bar to the dining room, so be it! We had free cocktails.

Oh what to do? For me it’s being busy – playing bridge is good. But we are having to break up there too. What began as 8 women is now down to 3 and anyone who is willing to join us!

Neil Sedaka was right - breaking up is hard to do!
