Say It Isn't So
Say It Isn’t So
Growing up in the tundra – Wauwatosa, Wisconsin where the winters are biting cold, I‘ve always been a basketball fan. Hmm … sitting in the cold bleachers at night, watching helmeted and padded football players from afar or sitting in the warm, yellow light of a basketball court watching players up front and personal. Not exactly a “Sophie’s Choice”!
Our Warriors didn’t make it to the playoffs and I, for one, really miss watching the games. Why, I ask myself? Why does watching your team bring so much pleasure? I guess being a fan of a local team provides a sense of community, being part of something bigger than yourself and all the petty issues and daily annoyances that we all have. Actually, I’m experiencing one as we speak. Have you ever had a shirt in which the label at the neck has been sewn in with metallic thread, end of which is sharper than a pin? Wow, the label sewers must have some laughs imagining the aggravation this will cause.
All good things must come to an end – so we’ve been told. And it seems as if the Warriors dynasty is coming to an end. The golden days of the Splash Brothers, Steph and Klay, are over. Steph is still here, however Klay has gone to Dallas. The Warriors are small, old and tired. I can relate – I’m old and tired too. And, small due to the shrinking process in the “golden years”.
Anyway it’s been confirmed that Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler will be out for, at least the first half of next season. Jimmy’s arrival was a shot in the arm for the team and the fans. And he fit in! He entertained the entire team for a weekend at his mansion in San Diego in preseason team bonding.
Admitting affection for Draymond Green is somewhat akin to finding good qualities in Hitler, but I like him! Green, that is, not Hitler! And, I’m also worried that he won’t be coming back next season. However, my favorite was Kevon Looney. How could they let this guy go! He had the size and plenty of talent and his attitude was over the top. He always looked as if he was thrilled to be playing basketball with the Warriors, even when on the bench. No ego here! Now with Kevon gone, I’m loving watching GP II, Gary Peyton, the second. Again – a lovely attitude. I understand that he is a favorite with all the women fans.
But ………. who will be our coach? Steve Kerr has indicated that it’s a 50/50 chance of his not being here next season. Say it isn’t so! Steve, you need to coach the Warriors to another championship!
In the words of writer, Doris Kearns Goodman, when writing about the old Brooklyn Dodgers, “there’s always next year!”
